For 600 years golf has been played on the grassy peninsular, the Links, just to the north of St. Andrews. The home of golf, the Old Course, is a short five minute walk from Monarchs House. Among the 50 championship courses within an hour’s drive of the towne centre are many hidden gems.
While St. Andrews is internationally acclaimed for golf (eleven courses for a towne of 14,000!), visitors realize quickly that the “auld grey towne” offers something for everyone.
More Than Golf
St. Andrews is also the home of Scotland’s oldest university, northern Britain’s largest medieval cathedral, two magnificent sprawling beaches, a town centre brimming with shoppes, a theatre, a movie house and several museums. For the socially inclined, Monarchs House is within walking distance of every one of St. Andrews’ 26 lively pubs. There are also exceptional walking and running trails, a theme park for youngsters and stunning botanical gardens, to name a few of the attractions.
For historians, many major events in the Scottish reformation took place here starting with martyrdom of Patrick Hamilton, burnt to death for preaching Lutheran doctrines in 1528. It will also come as no surprise to historians that three signers of the Declaration of Independence are St. Andrews University graduates.
Convenience
Monarchs House is only minutes walk from the Old Course, the centre of towne, the British Golf Museum, the St. Andrews Castle and Cathedral and the East and West Sand beaches. Monarchs House is conveniently located through the gateway cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, London and Amsterdam.

More from St Andrews
There is no single spot in Scotland equally full of historical interest … no place in this country over which the genius of antiquity lingers so impressively.
Lord Cockburn, 1844
